The Web giant launches a new on-line initiative to bring together former extremists, survivors, nonprofits, academics, and private sector leaders to fight violent radicalism.

Google is using technology to try to curb violent extremism around the world. Working with a think tank, venture philanthropists, and other partners, Google Ideas helped launch a new online network called Against Violent Extremism (AVE) today.

“What do a former violent jihadist from Indonesia, an ex-neo-Nazi from Sweden and a Canadian who was held hostage for 15 months in Somalia have in common?” director of Google Ideas Jared Cohen wrote in a blog post today. “In addition to their past experiences with radicalization, they are all also members of Against Violent Extremism.”

AVE’s goal is to bring together former extremists, survivors, nonprofits, academics, and private sector leaders to combine forces and use online tools to figure out how to prevent people from becoming radicalized.

“We also knew that there has traditionally been an over-reliance on governments to tackle these problems, so we wanted to see what diverse groups outside the public sector could offer,” Cohen wrote, “…using the Internet to ensure sustained discussion and debate.”

Google Ideas was founded in October 2010 by Cohen who previously worked on the U.S. State Department’s Policy Planning staff. The plan was to create what he calls a “think/do tank” and use technology to deal with human challenges, such as gang violence, war, and extremism.

Still in beta, the AVE Web site will be managed by the London-based think tank Institute for Strategic Dialogue, Google Ideas’ partner. The site will have videos, research, online tools, forums, and an interactive map that lists nearby events, people, and resources.

“Until now, there has never before been a one-stop shop for people who want to help fight these challenges–a place to connect with others across sectors and disciplines to get expertise and resources,” Cohen wrote.

Samsung hints at what’s coming for Galaxy S3 phone with new quad-core chip.

Electronics heavyweight Samsung will put quad-core silicon in its next Galaxy smartphone, upping the ante for mobile performance.

The Exynos 4 Quad integrates four processor cores and is built on the company’s cutting-edge 32-nanometer manufacturing process. The chip will run at speeds above 1.4GHz, the company said in a statement today.

As a yardstick, the third-generation iPad uses older 45-nanometer Samsung manufacturing tech and its central processing unit is dual-core (though the graphics processing unit is quad-core). And most multi-core smartphones and tablets on the market today are dual-core.

Samsung’s new chip — targeted at both tablets and smartphones — will land initially in the next Galaxy smartphone. “Already in production, the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May,” Samsung said in a statement.

Samsung’s statement continued. “The…processor is a crucial element in providing our customers with a PC-like experience on mobile devices. Samsung’s next Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers uncompromised performance and ground breaking multi-tasking features.”

That next Galaxy phone would likely be the Galaxy S3.

Other Exynos 4 Quad highlights that presage Galaxy S3 features:

Full-speed video: uses HD 30 frame per second video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back; also, includes an embedded image signal processor interface for a high-quality camera and an HDMI 1.4 interface.

Speed jump: Owing to its 32-nanometer tech, the Exynos 4 Quad has “two times the processing capability over the 45-[nanometer] process based Exynos 4 Dual while consuming 20-percent less power,” Samsung said.

Ready to plug into new phones: Exynos 4 Quad is “pin-to-pin compatible” with the Exynos 4 Dual, allowing smartphone and tablet suppliers to adopt the new solution without additional engineering or design efforts.

Based on ARM Cortex A9 design: Based on the current Cortex A9 tech from ARM. The latest and greatest ARM tech is called Cortex A15 but those chips won’t emerge as commercial products for a while yet.

In an interview, the security firm’s CEO says Apple has a lot more malware coming its way, and that it’s not putting enough resources into protecting users.

Forrester’s CEO isn’t the only one spouting doom and gloom for Apple today.

Now Eugene Kaspersky, the CEO of security firm Kaspersky Lab, says Apple is headed for a rough patch. However, this one’s in the world of computer security, and he says Apple is already getting into the thick of it.

Speaking to Computer Business Review at Info Security 2012 show in London this week, Kaspersky said that when it comes to computer security, Apple’s Mac platform was a decade behind Microsoft’s, and that it’s got some things to learn from its rival.

“They will understand very soon that they have the same problems Microsoft had 10 or 12 years ago,” Kaspersky said in an interview. “They will have to make changes in terms of the cycle of updates and so on and will be forced to invest more into their security audits for the software.”

“That’s what Microsoft did in the past after so many incidents like Blaster and the more complicated worms that infected millions of computers in a short time,” he added. “They had to do a lot of work to check the code to find mistakes and vulnerabilities. Now it’s time for Apple [to do the same].”

The statements come on the heels of Flashback, a high-profile piece of Mac malware that is estimated to have infected more than 600,000 Macs at its peak. More recent figures put its current infection somewhere at less than 185,000 machines worldwide.

Apple patched the system vulnerability the Flashback attacks were using, and released a removal tool for infected machines. But the company got flack from security experts for not fixing it sooner. Security companies – including Kaspersky – also made Apple look slow to react by offering up their own detection and removal tools ahead of an official fix.

Apple has, in fact, hardened Mac OS X against attackers in recent years, as well as shown off plans for added protective measures in future versions of the software. The last two major versions of Mac OS X has a built-in malware scanner called XProtect that is able to spot and quarantine known malware. Soon the company will also mandate that apps sold on its App Store will be compliant with new sandboxing rules designed to keep apps from doing any damage to user files, or other parts of the OS.

Apple’s also announced Gatekeeper, a technology that will be built into the upcoming release of OS X Mountain Lion, that gives users a way to install only software that’s been signed by registered developers.

Even with those things on tap, Kaspersky argues that Apple’s success will continue to make the Mac a bigger target.

“Cyber criminals have now recognized that Mac is an interesting area. Now we have more [malware], it’s not just Flashback or Flashfake,” Kaspersky told CBR. “Welcome to Microsoft’s world, Mac. It’s full of malware”

An Apple spokesman declined to comment on Kaspersky’s remarks.

“Can I unlock my iPhone?” This is, by far, the most common question we get, so I think it’s

time we put an end to it with this handy little chart brought you Kilkenny Computers.

For purposes of this article, we’ll give you a brief breakdown of the differences between jailbreaking and unlocking:

Jailbreaking – allows users to gain access to Apple’s operating system and download additional third party applications and themes otherwise unavailable through Apple’s App Store.

Unlocking – allows users to use their iPhone with other GSM carriers such as O2 or Vodafone. This comes particularly in handy if you are traveling outside of Ireland and wish to use your iPhone abroad. An iPhone must first be jailbroken before it can be unlocked.

Let’s start by figuring out the current firmware version installed on your iPhone. You can check your firmware version by following this path:

Settings > General > About > Version

Reading from a source today that seems to be in the know for Apple is stating that release of the much anticipated iPhone 5 will be in October. It seems the blackout information that I found yesterday would seem to be incorrect and that if there is a blackout the sources don’t think it would be for an iPhone launch. But the source didn’t give a solid date and just stated October as the month of choice. So now I have a third month to add to mix, maybe by next week I will find out the launch date will be post Thanksgiving. All in jest I do hope we have come to a final conclusion on when the final firm release date of the iPhone 5 will be.

It seems that on Tuesday Facebook decided it would be a great idea to release an online guide that gives you a step by step guide to help the small business use social networking of Facebook. Please visit facebook.com/business. This is what is called an online education center to help small business make a business page to help drum up more business.
Facebook’s new business web page does not come along with any new features — it simply puts a lot of information that may be handy for small businesses in one place. Perhaps most importantly, it serves as a nicely timed reminder that unlike Google+, Facebook encourages companies to use its service for company branding. “Facebook allows small businesses to create rich social experiences, build lasting relationships and amplify the most powerful type of marketing –- word of mouth,” a Facebook spokesperson wrote in an email on Tuesday afternoon. “We created Facebook.com/business to make it even easier for people to reach these objectives and grow.”
The funny part about this is that Google+ just announced how to be a business on their site so now Facebook is going blow to blow with Google and this could only make our social networking experiences better.

So Apple in just one day announced they have seen over 1 million users purchase and download the Mac OS X Lion, which is the eight major OS that Apple has launched. The price tag for this lovely OS, $29.99 through the Mac app store and a physical release due sometime next month for around $69.99.
“Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Lion is a huge step forward, it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.”

Lion introduces more than 250 new features to the Mac, including Multi-Touch® gestures; system-wide support for full screen apps; Mission Control, an innovative view of everything running on your Mac; the Mac App Store, the best place to find and explore great software; Launchpad, a new home for all your apps; and a completely redesigned Mail app.

So Microsoft’s announced a record for their fourth quarter and well it was huge. Revenue was marked at $17.37 billion for the quarter that ended on June 30th, 2011, which is about an 8% increase from last year. Now reasons for that are Microsoft Office 2010 which is being set as the fastest selling Office of all time. Windows Server, SQL Server and System Center also helped with this growth. The biggest winner for Microsoft by far was in the Entertainment and Devices Division and no I am not talking about the Windows Phone. This division grew 30% and that is large thanks to the Kinect, Xbox 360 and the Xbox Live service. No doubt we could see a surge of Xbox in the future as well, with all of the issues with Sony and there fight with hackers so people may skip the PS3 or the soon to be announced PS4 from what I hear in the rumor mills, and stick with Microsoft, and of course there is always Nintendo and the WiiU. The problem with the WiiU is that I worry there still will not be enough adult content to make it worth the price tag for many gamers. Yes it is innovative but I still don’t feel like it going to overtake the Xbox 360 or any other Microsoft systems that might come in the long run. So with that all being said Kudos to you Microsoft for being excellent in the field of gaming.

I have received a number of calls in the past week or so from panicked clients worried that they have lost all their data.

Whether they have got a virus, had a disk failure, their computer wont start or some other problem, the first question I always ask is “Do you have a backup?” – More often than not the answer is “No!”.

So why do we need backups?

Well your data can easily be lost whether by a disk failure, getting a virus, someone accidentally deleting files, or even a flood or other catastrophe.

Recovering data from damaged or failed hard disks is difficult and required specialist knowledge and equipment and is therefore very expensive. Also often data cannot be recovered at all due to excessive damage, or overwriting.

So my answer is to act now before it is too late – for your own sake. Hard drives fail all the time – it is only a matter of time, and backing up is easier than you think. It can be as basic as copying critical files onto a USB flash drive, CD or even emailing yourself a copy.

The other thing to remember is to keep your copy at a different location – if there is a fire or robbery your backup could be toast also (excuse the pun!).

So get started and make sure you have at least one backup of anything you would hate to lose.

If you would like something more elegant, like an automated backup that keeps regular backups both online and on a local external disk just give us a call or pop us an email.
